Will the real Supernova please stand up?

tommy%20lee.jpgThe battle of the bands heats up as "unknown" faces off against "unoriginal".

Supernova, perhaps best known for contributing the song "Chewbacca" to the cult movie "Clerks," has filed for a preliminary injunction to prevent the use of its name by a new supergroup involved in the CBS/Mark Burnett Prods. TV show "Rock Star: Supernova."

I don't blame the original Supernova for being annoyed that their failure to register on the pop culture radar allowed Burnett to miss that they even exist, but at least this could create a little fortunate buzz that their music clearly hasn't.

It's odd to have a battle over what is essentially a pretty dull name for a band. It's like fighting over "Starship" or "The Streets". Now if the show had been called "Rock Star: The Tragically Hip", I could see some reason for both parties wanting to make a claim.
