Will Smith as Captain America?

A rumor is currently being propagated that Will Smith has been offered the role of Captain America in Marvel Studios' planned superhero movie.

Oddly enough, the rumor is originating from actor Derek Luke, who talked to MTV while on tour for his new movie Miracle at St. Anna:

"I heard they offered Will Smith 'Captain America,'" said Luke, adding that the intriguing casting rumor "just shows you how times have changed."

A lot of people are freaking out about this, but let's run down the cracks in it:

-Luke could just plain be wrong, or lying.

-He said Will Smith was "offered" Captain America. That means he's probably on Marvel's wish list, as he should be, because he's the biggest movie star in the world. It doesn't mean Smith has any intention to accept the role.

-Smith has long said he wouldn't do any superhero movie unless it had a major spin on the genre -- which is why he chose Hancock. The possibility of doing two so close to each other would be an iffy career move, and this is a guy who's never made anything less than a terrific career move in his life.

Marvel has been making a habit out of leaking massive names for its superheroes -- Brad Pitt for Thor, Leonardo DiCaprio for Captain America -- and this is just another one of those cases.
