Wesley Snipes gets three years

Wesley_Snipes-Convicted.jpg

The story broke at the beginning of February that Wesley Snipes was acquitted of fraud or conspiracy charges in his whole not-paying-taxed debacle, charges which could've put him in jail for upwards of ten years. The celebration period was cut short late last week, however, when he was sentenced to three years for not filing tax returns.

The whole situation seems a little bit bizarre. At the trial, Snipes read a prepared statement in which he apologized for "mistakes" without ever mentioning "taxes," and his defense attorneys actually tried to offer the judge and the prosecution three checks equaling five million bucks (of the seventeen million he owes to the IRS). Meanwhile, both Spike Lee and Denzel Washington wrote what amounted to recommendation letters to the court on behalf of Snipes.

If you want to find out the details of the whole case, as well as - more interestingly - a look at Snipes as a person, I recommend this extensive article from Entertainment Weekly. Sample line: "It is easy to see how he became a star in the first place. He is intelligent, funny, and charming. But the actor also seems to have a natural gift for playing the offscreen role of the victim."
