Universal Studios' Fiery New Look

Photo Licensing by GumGum | © PacificCoastNews

It's a sad day in Hollywood as Universal Studios endured a massive fire to their backlot on Sunday. Areas damaged include a New York City street set, the King Kong attraction, and the Courthouse Square seen in all three Back to the Future movies.

Universal Studios has the biggest backlot in Hollywood. The fire was started accidentally by sparks from a blowtorch being used to repair part of the New York Street set.

Despite living on the opposite coast, I've taken the Universal Studios backlot tour twice. It's pretty fantastic to see for someone outside the business, especially since the sets were still being used regularly up until the fire. Surprisingly, the tour was actually up and running today, although the tramcar had to be diverted away from the fire-damaged portions. Variety reports that visitors "were able to see the damage up close...tourists applauded firefighters as they passed the smoldering wreckage."
