Transformers: Who says you can't go back?

Transformers_movie.jpgThe news of a live-action Transformers movie brought up a progression of memories for me. They were the favourite toy of my youth; I loved their ingenuity and flexibility and spent long hours building scenarios or just changing them back and forth.

They also mark the stage in life when I passed from the realm of childish things. I remember the last one I ever received as a present, and thinking that I was too old to play with them anymore. It remains unopened, somewhere in the storage closet in my basement, waiting until I have kids of my own.

Lastly, they make me think of that kid from high school (where are you these days, Alan?) who would still run around transforming, at an age where that kind of thing should get you beat up.

So I wondered if I'd have to watch the film with a warm sense of nostalgia, or if it would stand on it's own as intelligent and entertaining enough for my mature, discriminating half not to beat up my inner child. With the over-the-top Michael Bay involved, I'll admit to having sincere doubts, but damned if this trailer doesn't look pretty cool (and grown up). I may not be there on opening day a Megatron Club shirt, but I'll get there eventually.
