Tom Cruise splits with partner

Oh, you didn't think I meant Katie Holmes, did you? Sorry about the mix-up -- I'm talking about Paula Wagner, his producing partner who runs United Artists with him. She just quit the U.A. job.

The two themselves are still on good terms; it's just that Wagner -- who does most of the business stuff while Cruise is off doing cameos in Tropic Thunder and whatnot -- didn't have a very successful run at U.A. Apparently she kept butting heads with MGM, which also has an ownership stake in the company. Plus, the only film that the new U.A. has released so far is Lions for Lambs -- which flopped, big time, last year.

This leaves Cruise without someone to run United Artists for him and casts the future of the studio in uncertainty. For his part, Cruise seems to be focusing on his acting career -- though he recently dropped out of the thriller Edwin A. Salt, he's loosely attached to a comedy called Food Fight and is looking to remake a thriller called The Tourist with Spyglass Entertainment.

He's also still attached to Hardy Men, a comedy in which he and Ben Stiller would play grown-up versions of the Hardy Boys. It's reportedly going through some script issues and might not be made, but we're not-so-secretly hoping it's his next film. Because it sounds hilarious.
