The Incredible Hulk and The Happening both do well on their first day

Opening The Incredible Hulk and The Happening on the same weekend isn't quite as stupid as opening Get Smart and The Love Guru on the same weekend - yep, that's gonna happen - but they definitely share some of the same audience. Thus, it's encouraging to know that judging from Friday's box office estimates, both movies are doing solid business.

Hulk debuted with $21 million for the weekend, while the R-rated Happening scored $13 million. For the latter; that's almost double the opening day of Lady in the Water; for the former, that almost matches the opening day of 2003's The Hulk, which the new film wasn't expected to top.

In terms of critical response, Incredible Hulk is the clear winner and has been getting moderate-to-good reviews, while The Happening is getting atrocious reviews across the board - except for a few bizarrely high-profile exceptions like Ebert and the New York Times.
