The Dark Knight is bigger than the universe

Heath-Ledger-as-the-Joker.jpg

The Dark Knight nabbed the highest opening weekend ever, the official tallies from the July 18-20 span now confirm. It raked in $158.4 million, coming in even higher than the $155.1 million it was estimated to make on Sunday.

That puts it above the "biggest opening ever" competition by a healthy margin. The new #2, Spider-Man 3 scored a $151.1 three-day opening last year, while Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest made $134 million back in 2006. The next highest dates back to 2002, when the original Spider-Man rocked the world with a $114 million opening.

Adjusted for inflation, Dark Knight still comes out on top. It'll now undoubtedly become the highest-grossing film of the year, which was previously a two-way race between Indiana Jones and Iron Man (which are both hovering at around $315 million totals).

Luckily, it's also a very good film. And Heath Ledger will get an Oscar nomination.
