Sorry if you're tiring of all the superhero news. If you haven't noticed, pretty much every movie not starring Carrie Bradshaw or an alien crystal skull was a superhero movie of some type this summer, they all made a ton of money, and now that's all anyone in Hell is talking about.
Luckily, this also ties into some pseudo-scandals and backstage bickering.
According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, Tobey Maguire will be back for a fourth Spider-Man movie, which is being written write now.
It's always been tricky for the suits to get Maguire back in the sequels because he tends to hold out for higher salaries. The first time, in negotiations for Spider-Man 2, it blew up in his face when the studio purposefully leaked that it was considering replacing him with Jake Gyllenhaal. But I guess he's gotten better at it:
[S]ources told me that Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal was openly discussing Tobey's potential replacements with various Hollywood agents because Tobey was hanging tough about a deal. "She was looking around to cover herself because Sony wanted him badly and Tobey wasn't sure he wanted to do it," an insider explained to me. (Later today, a Sony Pictures spokesman claimed to me on the record, "There was never anyone considered for the role but Tobey.")
At the end of Spider-Man 3, Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and director Sam Raimi all claimed they didn't really want to do another one -- and definitely wouldn't do another one unless all three were involved. That's press junket speak for "we finally figured out we have much more leverage when working together, so give us a hell of a lot more money." Now that Maguire's back -- and Raimi too -- it should be only a matter of time before Dunst returns and an official announcement is made in one of the trades.
