Speed Racer stalls, sputters, stops.

Speed Racer, the first movie directed by the Wachowski brothers since the Matrix trilogy, became the first bomb of the summer this weekend, with a $20.2 million opening. Even pessimistic predictions had it opening in the high 20s, and Warner Bros. was originally hoping for upwards of $40 million.

The flick was produced for around $125 million, and probably spent at least $40 million for advertising.

Bad news all around, in other words. It's a shame - a lot of people are blasting the film itself, but I liked it for the most part; it was fun, Christina Ricci looked a lot better than she does in the above picture, and there's no denying that it's visually inventive beyond anything we've seen since, well, The Matrix.
