So I Kind of Liked Jay Leno for a Moment

Jay Leno has -- or rather had, until yesterday, when his run on The Tonight Show ended -- the biggest audience of all late night shows because he's so bland. A few really obvious topical jokes, a few very low-effort Jaywalking/Headlines bits, chat with some stars, and you've got a show. Dependable. But dependable's not the formula for critical success, which is why critics always sided with Letterman. Leno didn't ever seem to care as he was rich and had more viewers.

Conan's stepping into The Tonight Show slot next week, and on screen, it's not going to be that different for either man -- Leno's getting his own 10 p.m. show, and Conan's just moving up an hour from his former 12:35 spot.

So there were, appropriately, no waterworks on display during Leno's last show. He did, however, end it in a really nice, classy way. Get ready to go "Awwwwww."
