"Snakes" box office take just plain

samuel%20jackson.jpgThe big question surrounding Snakes on a Plane was whether the Internet hype could create a hit or if the online chatter only made it seem like the general population was excited. Unfortuntely for Samuel L. Jackson, the latter seems to be the case.

Snakes on a Plane opened to $15.3 million. An estimated $1.4 million of that came from shows at 10 PM on Thursday night. Gross is well below estimates that the hype could translate into a bow as high as the 30s and slightly below weekend tracking.

So the vocal minority braved the early crowds to catch opening night, but susbsequent shows didn't draw the masses. Thanks to a small budget and largely free advertising, the film is sure to be profitable, but I was hoping for more. If the early reviews are any indication, the pageantry surrounding the release far exceeded the actual film in terms of entertainment value. But I'm still looking forward to the sequel, "Snakes on a Submarine".

Won't Hollywood establishment consider this movie a huge success? As you stated, harnessing the viral nature of the net 'instead' of big budget marketing and seeing that translate into decent numbers probably means we're going to see a lot more movies find ways to use, seed the net with their marketing-disguised-to-be-usergen' campaigns.
