Sex and the City goes very Big

Turns out my doubts about Sex and the City's box office chances were unfounded, at least for this weekend.

The brand-empowerment flick has been doing ridiculous business for the past two days, beating Indiana Jones's second weekend (not entirely unexpected). On Friday alone it made $26 million bucks.

Since I can't be entirely supportive of the movie because I'm male, I should point out that grosses will probably plummet in weeks to come thanks to all the upfront dough its making from rabid fans. Actually, in many ways it now looks like it will mirror the performance of The Simpsons Movie last summer - way-bigger-than-expected opening weekend followed by heavy drops.

Of course, as it was with that movie, no one cares about subsequent weekends. It's all about the opening numbers, and therefore Sex and the City will be seen as a resounding success. No getting around it.
