Anyone who has followed the stormy career of Dallas Stars NHL hockey player Sean Avery has known that it was only a matter of time before the fit hit the shan. His mouth has been writing cheques his talent can't cash for years, but this time, he may have truly broken the bank.
I'm not going to recount his entire checkered history, but the writing was on the wall when Sean Avery began courting Canadian hottie Elisha Cuthbert back in March 2003. Elisha was a lightning rod for Avery's ego who truly began viewing himself as more than your garden variety hockey tough guy. They 'officially' became a couple in 2005 and Sean quickly immersed himself in the celebrity scene thanks to Elisha opening those doors for him. Sean and Elisha made it 2 years before breaking up in August of 2007.
The Canadian actress didn't stay off the market / ice for long as she began dating Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf shortly thereafter and they are still an active couple today. Fast forward to Tuesday, December 2nd when the Dallas Stars had traveled to Calgary to take on the Flames, and it was clear from the get-go that this was going to be the Elisha Cuthbert Cup. During the morning practice in Calgary on the day of the game Sean Avery went up to a cameraman and asked if the camera was 'on'. After it was confirmed that the tape was rolling, Sean Avery did what he does best, be a classless jerk.
"I'm just going to say one thing. I'm really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just wanted to comment on how, it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight."Kaboom! Bye bye Sean Avery. At least for 6 games and maybe longer depending on whether the Dallas Stars management and locker room has any desire to bring this dolt back. Let's not forget it was Dallas Stars General Manager Brett Hull who took a young Sean Avery under his wing and was his roommate in Detroit from 2001-2002. And it was that same Brett Hull who put his reputation on the line by agreeing to sign Avery this offseason to a 4-year $15.5 contract with Dallas.
Brett Hull has never been one to hide his true feelings or mince words. So lets hope Hull hasn't lost any backbone and does what finally needs to be done - kick Sean Avery to the NHL curb. It's unlikely any other team would want this cancer in their locker room, so with a little luck the NHL could finally be rid of the recurring nightmare that is Sean Avery.

When will owners and fans realize that characters like Sean Avery should not be tolerated in any sport. They may provide interesting press for some, sell more tickets etc. but these things are always short lived. The problem with the present exclusion is that it should have been done years ago. Unfortunately, as long as owners, fans and the press hail idiots like Avery, they will keep on popping up...and it will take 10 to 15 years to figure it out. If one team decides to pick this guy up after all of this, that's it for me and hockey...
