Saw franchise still for hacks

shawnee_smith.jpgI enjoy a good horror flick. But when it comes to this genre, my definition of "good" appears to be completely out of touch with the viewing public.

The sharp-edged horror film Saw III got an even larger cut of the weekend box office than expected, taking in $34.3 million.

I have yet to see the film, but I finally managed to get around to Saw II this past weekend. While it failed to rival the first Saw's dueling hamminess from the Carey Elwes and Danny Glover performances, it also lacked a hint of originality and much of the first film's style. This second film relied on Donnie Wahlberg to provide the over-the-top delivery of bad dialogue, while the band of the stock characters tried to escape from a booby-trapped house.

The critically ravaged Saw III doesn't feature any new B-list stars of note, so I'm counting on series regular Shawnee Smith to deliver most of the series' signature lame rantings over what's sure to be a painful 2+ hour viewing.

Bite your tongue... that was Donnie, not Mark Wahlberg.
