Rocky VI: The Statue Wars

20060511142409990007.jpgWith a new Rocky film only months away, there's been a recent effort by a city commissioner to move the bronze statue of fictional character Rocky Balboa to a more prominent location than the unused Veterans Stadium. The counter-punch is being led by the Philadelphis's Art Commission, which wisely points out the silliness of the display:

"It's not art," artist Moe Brooker, a member of the city Art Commission. "It was a prop."

I can understand the desire to promote and honour actual historical figures, but a statue of a movie character probably shouldn't be on display anywhere other than a theme park. Stallone's self-aggrandizing support for a more central location is comical enough to be a movie itself.

Now, there's a plot for the 60-year old Rocky. The embattled boxer comes out of retirement to bare-knuckle fight the entire Philly Art Commission for control of monument zoning, but through strength of character and steel-like determination, ends up redefining the entire nature of art.
