Robert Pattinson Mobbed at a Mall

So Robert Pattinson, the male lead in the upcoming movie Twilight, was going to have a mall signing on the outskirts of San Francisco on Monday night. Since local publicists and cops had never heard of Pattinson, they expected only 300-500 people to show up.

They were slightly off: over 3,000 screaming girls showed up, some of whom who had come as far away as L.A., Arizona, and reportedly even Hawaii. A few fans were trampled; one broke her nose. The signing was briefly canceled before the police finally got the crowd in order.

You can watch the news report on TMZ. The San Francisco-based Slashfilm, for one, had seen the fervor of Twilight fans once before at last summer's Comic-Con panel, and therefore wasn't surprised:

I explained to my nice local publicist about my experience at Comic Con, dealing with the hordes of Twilight fangirls and the ::shudder:: Twilight moms ::shudder::. She told me that they expected 300-500 people to show up, and I was shocked.

An interesting postscript to this story: For one of my other jobs, I was all set to interview Kristen Stewart, the female star of Twilight, after a scheduled mall appearance this coming Thursday in Washington D.C. The publicist contacted me yesterday and informed me they were canceling most of her press. She didn't mention why, but I have the tiniest hunch the Pattinson mess played into the decision to downsize the event.
