Milk....mm, mmm

The trailer for Gus Van Sant's Milk just debuted. It's a biopic about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official, who served as a San Francisco city supervisor beginning in 1977 before being assassinated by a fellow city supervisor, Dan White.

The flick is massive Oscar bait. Sean Penn plays Milk, Josh Brolin plays White, James Franco plays Milk's partner Scott Smith, and Emile Hirsch plays Cleve Jones, an intern in Milk's office who would later go on to create the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

The only female character you see in the trailer is Alison Pill, an up-and-comer who recently played the eldest daughter in Dan in Real Life.

Van Sant has directed some projects outside of Hell -- see the indie Elephant if you want to be deeply disturbed for weeks -- but he has a good track record for acclaimed mainstream movies, notably Good Will Hunting and Finding Forrester.
