Jordin Sparks on the VMAs

So at the VMAs, presenter Jordin Sparks went off-script to criticize host (and former sex addict) Russell Brand, who earlier in the show had mocked the Jonas Brothers for wearing abstinence rings: "It's not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut!"

Entertainment Weekly caught up with her yesterday to talk about the mild awkwardness:

"It’s something I feel strongly about,” she tells EW.com. “I wish I would’ve worded it differently — that somebody who doesn’t wear a promise ring isn’t necessarily a slut — but I can’t take it back now. It was a split-second thing, and it came out kind of wrong. Still, I don’t regret it.” Neither do the Jonas sibs, who complimented Sparks moments after the rant. As for Brand, he and Sparks shared a laugh after the show. “I have nothing against him at all,” says the singer.

Too bad. A juicy backstage fight would've been fun.

Abstinence is a fine idea for teenagers, no argument from me there, but I liken promise rings to WWJD bracelets (remember those?) and flag pins: if you're going to be abstinent (or be a Christian, or a patriot), just do it, don't go around wearing stuff to brag about it.
