Is "Grease" really the one that I want?

grease_tv_show.jpgI'm mildly appalled by the launch of the most recent reality song/dance fest, "Grease: You're the One That I Want." It's not that I feel that Broadway casting is such a sacred cow that it's wrong to rely on the wholly different medium of television to pick the show's stars. It's more that I'm alarmed to discover that I'm so out of touch with the cultural zeitgeist that Grease has somehow become relevant again without me knowing.

I would have hoped that potential Grease patrons my age would instead be content with Baby not being put in a corner for their fix of nostalgia, and that the new generation of musical fans cut their Broadway teeth on "Chicago" or some other more worthwhile spectacle.

I didn't catch the inaugural episode, but I trust they've at least made an effort to move away from the "Grease: The Movie" casting model of choosing actors old enough to have children in high school.
