Indiana Jones Conquers Cannes

The Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiere was yesterday at Cannes, and ever since then a steady flood of reviews have been coming out (press screenings were held here in the States as well). The verdict? Overall, surprisingly good - maybe it was just nerves or the result of talking about it for too long, but everybody seemed to be bracing themselves for a bad, Da Vinci Code-ish reception.

'Twas not to be. On Rotten Tomatoes, the flick is sitting pretty at 81%, with 11 negative and 46 positive reviews. The audience at Cannes apparently liked it too, as the standing ovation was, by one count, three and a half minutes. (They love their standing ovations at Cannes. In 2004, there were rumors that Fahrenheit 9/11 got a twenty-minute standing O.)

I was able to catch one of the press screenings, and to be honest, I have to abstain a few days while I mull it over. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it; ultimately I think it'll be judged as a worthy successor to Temple of Doom and Last Crusade. Raiders of the Lost Ark will always stand above the rest as a perfect adventure movie:
