Inadvertent Public Singing - Dylan-style

reign-over-me.jpgThis morning, on my way to work, I was listening to my "old mellow" playlist, which includes some sweet soul (there's a post on this later), some mellow classic "rock", and a lot of Dylan. I inadvertently sang along to two Dylan songs on the bus. The first, Lay Lady Lay, I've mentioned on here before. I don't know what it is about that song; I think it reminds me of Babealicious, the guy I had a massive painful crush on for the entire five years we were at university together (we both took the scenic route). He was a dirty guy, in that good kind of way (you know what I'm talking about ladies, don't you?), and Lay Lady Lay seems like they're talking about good dirty guys.

But the other song I sang this morning is much more traditional, so old that it has no author. Yes, I sang House of the Rising Sun on the 97 Bayshore this morning, just in case someone googles that.

I looked up the lyrics to said song when I got into work this morning and was shocked to find out that I have no clue what they mean. I will post them below. Read them for yourself. Is the singer sposed to be the girl who's been ruined? Cause that's not right... Dylan is such a dude, I don't want to think of him as a girl.

Speaking of Dylan - have you seen the trailer for the new Adam Sandler movie (Reign Over Me)? Could he look any more like Dylan? I thought not...

There is a house down in new orleans
They call the risin sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl
And me, oh god, I'm a-one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed these new blue jeans
My sweetheart was a gambler, lord
Down in new orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

He fills his glasses up to the brim
And he'll pass the cards around
And the only pleasure he gets out of life
Is ramblin' from town to town

Oh tell my baby sister
Not to do what I have done
But shun that house in new orleans
They call the risin' sun

Well, its one foot on the platform
And the other foot on the train
I'm goin back to new orleans
To wear that ball and chain

I'm a-goin back to new orleans
My race is almost run
Im goin back to end my life
Down in the risin' sun

There is a house in new orleans
They call the risin' sun
Its been the ruin of many poor girl
And me, oh god, I'm a-one.
