Has Catherine Hardwicke Already Been Replaced on the Twilight Sequels?

Well that was a short honeymoon.

News broke last week that Catherine Hardwicke got fired (er, excuse me, left "due to timing") from the upcoming sequels to Twilight, starting with New Moon. Now Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that another director may have already been found:

I don't have official confirmation yet that this Twilight sequel offer has gone out to Weitz. But my insider says another reason it came down is because Weitz and Summit's president of production Eric Feig are longtime pals. The source tells me Weitz is "still considering" the offer to helm New Moon and possibly also Eclipse if the sequel and threequel movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's series of vampire books are made back-to-back.

Meh. I like Weitz's work on American Pie and About a Boy, but the guy has the poise of a paper bag. The Golden Compass didn't work out so well here in the U.S., but at least it showed he can do good-looking special effects -- something Hardwicke cannot do, as anyone who saw the Buffy the Vampire Slayer-level effects in Twilight already knows.
