Google gives music videos a home on the web

google_youtube.jpgCapitalizing on the unspoken decision by music video networks to air anything but actual music videos, some of the online services have moved to fill the gap.

On Monday, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group both signed deals with Google to include their music videos on the Google Video Web site. Internet users can watch the videos for free and Google and the record companies will share revenue from advertising.

YouTube has signed a similar deal with Sony and Universal, which removes the threat of copyright lawsuits, but also means that any unauthorized content from those companies will be filtered from the site. No word yet on how the just completed sale of YouTube to Google will affect these deals, but my hope is that they can work together to prevent Screech's tape from ever reaching the Internet.
