Emmy's deserving and surprising winners

office%20cast.jpgThis year's Emmy's are finally done, and I'm generally pleased with the outcome. Emmy voters have a pretty long history of choosing incumbents (see Frasier), but due at least in part to the new voting format, some of the more clever shows and actors were rewarded.

Some of the winners deserving of a fist pump and a vigorous head nod are:

-Comedy Series: "The Office," NBC
-Supporting Actor, Comedy Series: Jeremy Piven, "Entourage," HBO
-Writing for a Comedy Series: "My Name Is Earl: Pilot," NBC
-Variety, Music or Comedy Series: "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," Comedy Central.

Among the surprises were:

-Supporting Actress, Comedy Series: Megan Mullally, "Will & Grace," NBC
-Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program: Barry Manilow, "Barry Manilow: Music and Passion," PBS.

Megan Mullally was largely a surprise because I hadn't realized that "Will and Grace" was still on the air last year. As for Barry Manilow's win, I'm surprised to discover that I was somehow unknowingly transported into a bizarre alternate universe where a "talent" such as he could even be nominated.
