Carrie Prejean and the NOM, a Match Made in Heterosexual Heaven

You remember Carrie Prejean. She won Miss California and created a stir last week when Perez Hilton asked her about marriage equality and she said she only supported "opposite" marriage -- i.e. marriage between a man and a woman.

It could've just been left as an awkward spat between an openly gay blogger and a beauty pageant winner. But apparently the National Organization for Marriage (and it would be helpful to note at this point that organizations with words like "Marriage" and "Family" and "Values" in their names are almost always extremely anti-gay) sought out Prejean and asked her to record an anti-gay marriage commercial for them.

The NOM is the group responsible for the recent "gathering storm" ad that's been ruthlessly mocked by The Colbert Report and Funny or Die.

The original ad is your basic fear-mongering bigotry, with the added creativity of trying to paint the bigots as the ones who are being persecuted; at one point, a woman claims she might lose her job because of her belief in traditional marriage.

The problem is, it's done in such a hokey, I-can't-believe-they-thought-this-was-a-good-idea way that it's too funny to be taken seriously. Besides, substitute "gay marriage" for "interracial marriage" -- something that was just as controversial back in the day, and still is in some circles in Alabama and Utah -- and the entire wishy-washy argument comes crashing down.

So yeah, back on topic, now Prejean is going to appear in one of these ads, which proves that the NOM didn't learn anything from the reaction to their first ad and are still exactly as self-aware as they were before.

Some people are applauding Prejean for staying true to her religious beliefs. But if she really wanted to stay true to her religious beliefs, she would bring an offering of two turtledoves or two pigeons to a priest after she's finished having her period, so that the priest can make an atonement on behalf of her menstrual discharge.

Ew. Sorry, that was kind of out of left field. Where did I get that? Oh, from the Book of Leviticus, the same book that complains about men sleeping together being an "abomination."

But hey, that was God in his creepy Old Testament phase. In the New Testament, Paul also condemns gay behavior. Except...he also says that women should wear plain clothes and never do their hair or wear makeup (Timothy 2:9). As a beauty contestant, Prejean makes a career out of doing the opposite.

Fail.
