Apocalypto rules box office (sort of)

There's been a fair amount of noise about the #1 box office opening of Hollywood whipping boy Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.

Mel Gibson's personal troubles didn't haunt him at the box office, as his Apocalypto surprised prognosticators and became the No. 1 film of the weekend. - USA Today
Mel Gibson's bloody "Apocalypto" debuted as the No. 1 weekend movie, proving the filmmaker can deliver a winner despite a drunken-driving arrest and anti-Semitic rant last summer. - Seattle Post Intelligencer
Controversial filmmaker Mel Gibson's violent thriller "Apocalypto" found an opening weekend audience and topped the box office — despite its subtitles, unknown cast and obscure subject matter. - Los Angeles Times

apocalypto.jpgWhat's mentioned further down in the various articles is that the film made a mere $14.2 million, the lowest total for a number one film in over three months, and some $70 million less than the opening of the Passion of the Christ. Leading the pack is less impressive when it's a pack of three-legged dogs, but the only thing the American media enjoys more than knocking an arrogant jerk (like old Mel) off his perch is celebrating the victory of an underdog (like new Mel).
