Alec Baldwin: A Globe Well-Earned

Nothing too surprising coming out of last night's Golden Globes. Despite the buzz for The Departed, many correctly guessed that Babel would walk away with Best Drama. And while some feel that DiCaprio is due, Forest Whitaker's strong performance was believed to have a strong shot at overcoming Leo's votes (split between his two performances in Blood Diamond and the aforementioned Scorsese film).

So instead of celebrating an underdog or mourning someone who was robbed, I'd like to acknowledge one that was expected, deserved and won.

Best Actor, Comedy: Alec Baldwin. alec_baldwin_30_rock.JPG

I didn't love 30 Rock immediately. Too much focus on Tracy Morgan (who does well enough in a more limited role) and too much focus on what goes into a sketch comedy show (already done in boring enough fashion over at Studio 60). But Alec kept me watching. He's had his share of dog performances over the years, but this character and writing suits him like nothing since Glengarry Glen Ross. As 30 Rock's focus shifted away from the fictional show and over to the characters, both Baldwin and Tina Fey have created moments of brilliance. I'm pretty surly most mornings, but found myself laughing uncontrollably over yesterday's cereal while watching a taping of last Thursday's episode. Congratulations Alec, first prize is better than a set of steak knives.
